OUTDOOR PLAY DATES
With the approach of warmer weather, we will try to schedule some outdoor open play dates for all skill levels. Kim Smith and Sadie Reilly will have the courts set up at Manhassett Park on Thursday, March 28th and Friday, March 29th from 9 – 11:30 AM. Manhassett Park is located at 500 Long Branch Avenue in Long Branch. Also, Kim will be setting up the courts under the lights at Victory Park in Rumson from 6 – 9 PM on Saturday, March 30th. No need to register. Just show up. Hopefully Mother Nature will be kind and give us some decent weather for these dates.
Also on Saturday (3/30), located across the street from Victory Park, Victory Tavern will be featuring the music of Kul d’Sack from 8 – 11 PM. MPC member Richard Morris plays in the band. Kim and others will be rolling up the pickleball nets and walking across the street to enjoy Richard’s music and some relaxation. You are invited to join them whether or not you play at Victory Park.
MORE TOURNAMENT NEWS
MPC members continue to make hay in Florida. At the Halpatiokee Tournament last weekend in Stuart, Florida, it was an all MPC finals match that pitted Chip Rodgers and his partner, Linda Horst, against Tom Zapcic and Missy Potter. Chip and Linda edged out Tom and Missy to take the gold medal, but Tom and Missy received a well-deserved Silver. Congratulations to all for keeping Monmouth Pickleball Club in the Florida pickleball headlines.
Hello MPC Members – I’m sharing some MPC news and happenings below.
Outdoor Pickleball Play
We are getting near the end of the indoor pickleball season. We will continue booking indoor open play sessions through the end of March and early April and then we will begin keeping an eye on the weather as many players start heading outdoors. If we see a nice outdoor play day on the horizon, we will post it on SignupGenius along with the indoor sessions. The first of these outdoor sessions has been scheduled for this Friday, March 22nd from 10 AM – 12 PM at Manhassett Park, 500 Long Branch Avenue in Long Branch. While the weather still looks clear and relatively warm, it might be a windy day. Hopefully we can still get in some outdoor play time at this facility. As an alternative to the Red Bank Y, it looks like Manhassett Park will be one of our primary MPC gathering spots for the summer. There are 4 tennis courts and 2 of them have been striped with 4 pickleball courts. There are corner markers on the other tennis courts and we can tape additional courts as needed. Long Branch Rec intends to stripe the other courts in the near future and has indicated a willingness to support pickleball play at this location. They have installed a storage box with 8 pickleball nets at this site. A big thanks to Kim Smith and Andrea Reichert who have had many continuing discussions with Long Branch Rec about expanding pickleball play at Manhassett Park.
Chip Rodgers and Paul Donohoe are still fine tuning their pickleball game down in Florida. Looks like they’ll be a force to be reckoned with when they return to NJ in the Spring. Chip and Paul recently added to their medal collection by taking the Silver in the Timber Pines Member Guest where Paul lives. Congratulations to both on another great showing!!
Men’s Winter Shoot Out Wrap Up
The MPC men’s group has wrapped up it’s 10 week long Winter Shoot Out season. 20 players battled it out each week in an extremely competitive round robin format. The top spot in this league event came right down to the wire as Kevin McManus slipped by Jim Moran in the final week to capture 1st Place. Both players has a great season and took turns leading the pack at different times. Congratulations to Kevin on his victory!! And of course the suds were flowing for the victory celebration.
